  1. A segment of DNA, usually in a prokaryote, that randomly inserts itself within a different chromosome within the cell. Usually more than 5000 base pairs in length (though eukaryotic transposons are usually much shorter).
  2. A genetic element that has the ability to move (transpose) from one site on a chromosome to another.
